‘100-mile-an-hour Alice’ celebrates
She celebrated her 100th birthday at Longacre Care Home, in Chute Way, Worthing, on Friday with family and friends.
Born in Worthing, she went to Davison High School before marrying a fireman, Claude Humphrey. They brought up their family in a firemen’s cottage in Charlecote Road, Worthing, but Claude died at the age of 53.

Her four children, Penny Simpson, Alan Humphrey, Pam Goodland and David Humphrey joined the party, which included entertainment and a special cake.
Penny said Alice had worked up until the age of 70. She learned shorthand at Brighton College and worked in offices before she was married, then later worked in a number of cake shops in Worthing.
A long-standing member of West Worthing Working Men’s Club, Alice still enjoys going there for bingo evenings, although she goes more to socialise than to play these days.
