Gilbert studied at De Havillands and signed up with the RAF at the start of the Second World War. He served in Squadrons 50, 149 and nine as a Flight Lieutenant, trainer and navigator, and flew Wellington and Lancaster bombing raids over Berlin, Arnhem and Turin.
After the war he joined his father in the City where he worked in the import/export business, often travelling to Pakistan and India.
Daughter Denise said: By this time mum had given up hairdressing to become a full-time mum, making for us a wonderful family home always a mum to come home to.
