Diggers work to keep Pagham residents safe from the sea

Sheet steel piles measuring 10m long will reinforce the vulnerable causeway which separates the lagoon from the harbour.
The work to complete the inland bank is being done by the Environment Agency and is set to be finished before the end of the month.

Hide AdPagham Parish Council has contributed £30,000 for the work on behalf of residents in the predicted flood zone.
Chairman Ray Radmall said: “The causeway embankment was subject to a partial collapse in the late 1970s, and was seriously eroded and overtopped in winter 2013, necessitating emergency evacuation to Pagham Village Hall.
“A serious breach or collapse could affect properties in Church Lane, Pagham Road, Sea Lane, St Thomas’s Drive, Swandene, Lagoon Road, Well Road, Sandy Road and Beach Road.”
A planning application to dissect the large spit at the harbour mouth which has caused coastal erosion has been submitted.
