Most of these menus list their dishes in mouthwatering detail until you get to the bottom and find that mystery foodstuff: the “vegetarian option”. I wonder what people would think if the menu read “meat option, fish option, poultry option”? Why is it that the vegetarian dish has to be kept a secret? Could it perhaps be hiding the fact that, for the price of a 10oz steak, pan-fried sea bass or chicken breast in white wine sauce, we vegetarians are offered a heap of rice with a couple of sliced mushrooms on top or a bowl of pasta with tomato sauce. Come on you restaurateurs - be imaginative, be informative, but above all be honest. ELIZABETH DOWNS Barnhorn Road Bexhill on Sea
