Rye lifeboat in search for dinghy

The B-875 Alexander launched at 11:50am at the request of Dover Coastguard.
A report had been received form a member of the public saying a boat with two people on board was in difficulty off the shore at Winchelsea Beach.

Hide AdThe crew of Relief Lifeboat B-875 Alexander arrived on scene at 11:55am but no casualty was located.
“A search from the Mary Stanford Lifeboat House back to Rye Harbour was initiated,” said a spokesman.
“The only boat fitting a similar description was spotted half a mile from Rye Harbour entrance.
“The crew of the boat confirmed that they had been in the vicinity of the Mary Stanford Lifeboat House but were not in any difficulty.

Hide Ad“Dover Coastguard were informed and Relief Lifeboat B-875 Alexander was stood down at that time.
“When the volunteer crew arrived back at station at 12:15pm they found another boat fitting the description tied up on the public slipway at Rye Harbour.
“A chat with the occupants revealed they had been fishing off the Mary Stanford Lifeboat House.
“The Volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew felt that this was the boat that had been seen off the shore at Winchelsea Beach.”

Hide AdTony Edwards, deputy launching authority at Rye Harbour RNLI Lifeboat Station said: “while this was a false alarm, it is better to be safe than sorry.
“If you see someone in danger dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard”
