EAST BLATCHINGTON LECTURES: Is starting this year’s series with a talk about one of the most intriguing English painters. It will be given by the art historian Kay Blackburn at St Peter’s Church, Belgrave Road on Tuesday April 5. Her subject is Joseph Wright of Derby an 18th century painter, talented and versatile, who developed new and original subjects, including night scenes, scientific experiments and early industrial scenes. His main work was in depicting the domestic and workshop interiors at the time of the Industrial Revolution where by the light of a candle or a furnace, the figures are thrown into relief and dramatically presented. His famous painting, now in The National Gallery was An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump and not quite as horrific as it may sound. He also painted some fine portraits of high standing people of the time. The illustrated talk starts at 2.30pm and everyone is welcome. Tickets are £7 which includes tea and cake and are available on the day or from Newberry Tully Estate Agent, Church Street.
