‘FoodCloud’ will alert community groups and charities to surplus food at Tesco stores, which they can distribute at the end of the day.
Tesco and initiative partner Fareshare are asking organisations to register for the app to receive products such as meats, ready meals, dairy and fresh fruits and vegetables.

Hide AdRachel Finn, head of the community food programme at Tesco, said: “No food that can be eaten should go to waste.
“We’re really excited to start working on this initiative to ensure that any unsold food we have is made use of.
“We are looking forward to forging strong links with local charities and community groups in Chichester, and to use this initiative to support their efforts to help vulnerable people in our community.”
As part of their pledge to cut waste from their supermarkets, Tesco has established a Community Food Connection program alongside with Fareshare’s FoodCloud, and is set on gathering charities and community groups together to redistribute the unsold food to those in need.

To date, 350,000 meals have been donated by Tesco’s Community Food Connection, with 1,000 charities signing up to the prospect.
In 2016, 14 UK Tesco stores started the programme and the scheme is growing.
FoodCloud is a result of Tesco’s newest step with Fareshare throughout a three-year partnership to make unsold food available from Tesco supermarkets, dotcom centres and distribution centres.

There is also a similar initiative in France, where the government has made it illegal for supermarkets to throw away unsold food.
Instead, French food stores have to give it to food charities or food banks.
Combined with a 15% increase in the amount of food sold in supermarkets, the European country has seen approximately ten million more meals given to people who need it.
