Worthing Horticultural Society spring show

After very difficult growing conditions experienced in the last few months, with spring flowers in bloom at Christmas and the gales that swept through the country over the Easter weekend, the society was delighted with the number of entries in its show on Saturday.
Jean Griffin from the BBC Radio Sussex Dig It programme was the main judge. She said she was impressed with the quality of the blooms and thought the hall at Offington Park Methodist Church, in South Farm Road, Worthing, looked very colourful with all the narcissi and tulips.

Hide AdThere was also a lovely display of pot plants, with an amaryllis winning the best exhibit in show, and there were many entries in the cookery classes.
Main prize winners were:
H. and A. Pullen-Burry Silver Challenge Cup – Alasdair MacCulloch, for the most points in the flower classes.
Col S.C. Stern Silver Challenge Cup – Christine Fry, for the best vase of narcissi.
The Daffodil Society Bronze Medal – Christine Fry, for the best exhibit in the narcissi classes.

Hide AdFreeman Hardy and Willis Cup – Jane Pumphrey, for the best exhibit in show.
The Society’s Cup – Carol Stanbridge, for the best exhibit in the flower arranging classes.
William Apted Memorial Cup – Michael Innes, for the most points in the cookery classes.
Ted Turner Cup – Orchard Chamberland for the best exhibit in the children’s classes.

Hide AdWorthing Horticultural Society is the town’s oldest society, having been established in 1890. It normally holds three competitive shows a year, in spring, summer and autumn, providing a wonderful show of flowers, plants, vegetables, floral art, handicrafts and cookery.
Other events during the year include outings, guest speakers and social occasions.
