The Great Storm was followed by the Great Tidy Up while everyone tried to carry on as usual.
These three pictures were published in the Mid Sussex Times on October 23 1987 and show a team of rugby players, a school harvest festival and a headteacher’s farewell.

Speaking as guest of honour at a coffee morning, she said: “I am very delighted that so many people came, especially after the terrific storms.”
Over at Lindfield Infant School, the children were celebrating their Harvest Festival.
Surrounded by residents and school governors, they proudly showing off their harvest wares and planted two apple trees in the grounds. The service was led by the Rev Norman Smith, of Lindfield United Reformed Church.

With the storm having made short work of many goalposts, there wasn’t much sport on but that didn’t stop the lads of Oathill Community College winning a mini rugby tournament.
The Steyning Sevens event saw James Ramsden, Jon Mitchell, Jason Cox, Russell Victory, Tim Dearden, David Calver, Darren Morgan, Paul Hicks, Simon Boyling and Oliver Cooper beat Slindon College in the final.
With a score of 32 points to 4, you could say they stormed to victory...or not.
