MEMBERS of Blacklands Christians recently enjoyed a visit to a horse rescue centre.
More than 30 members of the group made the trip to Brownbread Horse Rescue Centre in Ashburnham on Monday (June 16). They enjoyed a short guided tour of the building and yard area by Tony Smith, the chairman of trustees at the centre.

Mr Smith als
o talked the visitors through some of the horses currently being cared for. One horse, he explained, had been hanging in a sling because it had been so emaciated when it was rescued it was unable to stand up on its own.

This was the first time the centre had encountered such a weak horse and staff at Brownbread were learning by trial and error how to keep the horse alive.

On the day of the Blacklands visit the horse, after four-and-a-half weeks in the sling, was able to get up by itself for the first time since being rescued.

Rain the previous day had prevented the group sitting outside so they heard a summary about the chairty's activities in the swimming pool building and enjoyed refreshments.

Tony Birmingham, a key figure at Blacklands Christians, organised a raffle and Bill Burrows, the organiser, thanked Brownbread Horse Rescue Centre on behalf of the group.

The next open day at Brownbread Horse Rescue, is September 14 and anyone who wants to attend, or is interested in the centre can call 01424 892381.
