ON Friday May 2, members had another convivial evening - this time discussing 'My Antonia' by Willa Cather.
This is very much an American novel about early immigrants and their relationshiop with the new country.

Opinions about the book varied, as usual, but most of us felt it was a very rich portrait of life for early settlers in Nebraska. It's a social history that reads as a novel with a variety of characters and events, despite the lack of a storyline.

Overall, we felt the book could have benefited by not being quite so long but we loved its vividness and ability to bring to life those times for readers who know little of them and we liked the relationship between Antonia and the writer of these memories - Jim. We wanted them to marry.

Our next meeting is at Southwater Community Centre at 7pm on Friday June 6. If you would like to be a member, come along or ring Susan on 425859.
