The Conservative party in Hastings received some flak for not attending the anti-British National Party in the town before the local elections this month.

All councillors were invited to the town centre rally, but not one conservative councillor showed up, labour group leader Jeremy Birch told the first meeting of Hastings Borough Council of the 2008-9 administration this week.

To much laughter, council leader Peter Pragnell said: "I've never known a rally or a march achieve anything, except if they start breaking windows."

Many of the councillors jokingly asked if Cllr Pragnell was giving them the go-ahead to break windows.

Does Jeremey Birch not realise that we live in a democracy ? ( See Michael Foster view )

Whilst I do not in any way endorse the BNP ...the facts are that it isstill a legal party.

Studies have also show that it is Labour's neglect of certain socio-economic groups that has led to a rise in the membership of the BNP in many parts of the country.

The solution .....get rid of this autocratic government so that people start again to believe in mainstream politics which has been so devalued by Labour.

By the way I don't rmemeber Mr Birch marching about the abhorent way old people are often treated in care homes and the NHS. Priorities ?

Yes I also do not support the B.n.p.
However, this Government new labour has one of the worst records for eroding ones civil liberties and curtailing freedoms.
It is also worth remebering that at the recent borough elections, 60% of the people did not turn out to vote, or spoilt their ballot paper. This demonstrates that not only is their voter apathy, but the majority of people feel cynical about the democratic process.
We have the highest incarceration rate for young people, than in the whole of Europe under New Labour.
Young people are finding it increasingly difficult to purchase their own home. (new labour)

the post office closures happened under labour i think.
i think that the conservatives are fiscally more responsible and this will save the people money. i think that is good that we now have a new council it is good to have opposition to labour and strong leadership for a change.
